In honour of the gin distilleries which opened in Clerkenwell during the 18th century, The Larder bar has gathered the largest collection of gin in London. The streets surrounding The Larder building were chosen by master gin distillers due to the purity of water in the area, which was then known as Clerks Well. The most famous distillery belonged to Alexander Gordon which opened on St John Street in 1769. Others included the Booths gin distillery in Britton Street. The stone frieze, depicting the methods of gin production, can still be seen today.
